Highwood has a special
interest in helping persons afflicted with autoimmune diseases. Dr.
Bird has a particular interest in this area of medicine. There are a
wide variety of autoimmune problems. They include rheumatoid
arthritis, multiple sclerosis, crohns disease, thyroid problems,
psoriasis and many others.
The programme at Highwood
for those with these conditions is aimed at immune modulation and
enhancement (without aggravation). Specific treatments may include
any or all of the following: green vegetable juices, intravenous
vitamin therapy, fever baths, clay wraps, far-infrared therapy,
prolonged juice fasting, keffir, fenugreek herbal tea, dental
evaluation and blood testing. Guests should not expect to get
significant results on the 4-day programme for these conditions. The
18-day programme is definitely recommended. |

This is another special
interest area of Dr. Bird’s. His approach is detailed on his web
site
www.burnoutsolutions.com.au. All
guests coming to Highwood will be given ample consultation time with
Dr. Bird (bulk-billed) in an endeavour to sort out possible causes
and recommended treatments. Several treatments can be tried and
monitored while sufferers are at Highwood. The 19-day stay is
strongly recommended. |

Highwood Health is pleased
to report excellent results for most type 2 diabetics who come.
Persons who are also overweight do especially well. One of the
options that Highwood can offer is for diabetics to have a major
reduction or cessation of medication (including insulin) while they
do their juice fasting. The resident doctor medically supervises
this. Most of our type 2 diabetics have done this successfully and
without problems. We have noticed that when this is done and guests
restart their medication, they often need significantly less. Going
off some medication during the fast also seems to aid weight
reduction. |

This is another common
reason for guests to come to Highwood. We are pleased to report very
satisfying results in almost all sufferers. Guests should aim at
losing 1-2 kg per week. We like to emphasize the importance of
maintaining changes in diet and exercise on returning home so that
weight optimization can continue long-term. |

Many guests have come to
Highwood with cancer issues. The commonest cancers we have dealt
with are breast and prostate (with and without metastases). We have
also had a number of unusual cancers (e.g. lymphoma, melanoma of the
eye). Our official position at Highwood is that cancer is best dealt
with using a combination of the best of orthodox and natural
therapy. In particular, Dr. Bird is not in favour of sufferers who
are under a lot of emotional stress (e.g. from relationship
problems) trying to use just natural methods. He has been observing
cancer treatments for about 10 years in his patients and has noticed
a definite trend: Those who do best are those prepared to use the
best of both orthodox and natural methods, especially where there is
significant stress. Many do not realize that there are natural ways
of helping minimize the side effects of surgery, radiotherapy and
chemotherapy. Strictly speaking radiotherapy is a natural method of
treatment since the x-rays used are a natural phenomenon in our
environment. We just use them in unnatural concentrations in cancer
therapy. But so do we use vitamin C and beetroot in unnatural
amounts in some anti-cancer protocols. It is not natural to eat the
equivalent of four beetroots per day (taken as juice)! We say these
things because we have known of cancer sufferers being pressured in
various ways and to being told that they are “denying the faith” if
they consent to any orthodox treatments. It is true that the
pressure can also be the other way – to not use anything natural and
just to trust the orthodox system.
It is always best to use
orthodox, proven methods for diagnosis and monitoring of cancer. Be
prepared to change what you are doing if no progress is being made.
Highwood has seen good
outcomes in numbers of guests coming in before, after and during
orthodox treatments. They come to have natural complementary therapy
and evaluation. We also pay especially attention to matters relating
to stress. |

Lifestyle modification is a
foundational treatment for these conditions. All guests at Highwood
have cardiac evaluation, including ECG and doctor’s examination.
Blood tests for cholesterol, etc. are also offered. Treatment at
Highwood includes tasty cholesterol free food, exercise therapy,
stress control and help with other specific issues like smoking. |
|
|
|
Treatment includes juice
fasting, sauna and other detox treatments, relaxing anti-craving
herbs, exercise and stress control. These can be combined with
nicotine patches and other orthodox methods. We are pleased to
report that as of this month (June 2007) Dr. Bird knows of no
stop-smoking guest who has put on weight while at Highwood. |
Asthma and Bronchitic Conditions
|
|
Treatment aims at lifestyle
improvements, lung strengthening, increasing exercise tolerance, and
learning to use natural methods. Our doctor can evaluate drug
treatment. We have had good results in several guests coming with
these type of complaints. |
